Types of Uterine Fibroids

Also known as myomas or fibromas, fibroids are non-cancerous growth of muscle tissues in the female uterus. Depending on the size, location, and severity, they can be classified into various categories.

Subserosal Fibroids

These non-cancerous tumors grow outside the wall of the uterus. Large-sized subserosal tumors press up against the urinary bladder and distort the shape of the uterus. These fibroids cause maximum pain during sex in many women.

Intramural Fibroids

These muscular lumps dig deep inside the uterus wall. They can grow into massive tumors and can stretch the wall to a painful extent.

Pedunculated Fibroids

These tumors are attached to the inside or outside of the uterus, connected by a tiny stem. They resemble mushrooms with a stalk and an umbrella-shaped top.

Submucosal Fibroids

These muscle tissues grow in a lump underneath the uterus wall lining. As they occupy the cavity where a baby grows during pregnancy, these tumors can cause sterility and miscarriage in sterile women.

Cervical Fibroid in Statu

These tumors grow within the cervical tissue. These occur rarely but can be easily detected in women.

Intraligamentous Fibroid

These are rare tumors that grow and attach themselves to the connective tissues present outside the uterus.

Factors that Influence Growth of Uterine Fibroids

A recent Market Research Future (MRF) report stated that North America had recorded the largest market share in the uterine fibroid market. Increased awareness among the people, easy availability of advanced technologies, and an established healthcare sector have contributed to this positive impact on women’s health.

Many factors cause or instigate the growth of these non-malignant tumors in a woman’s body.

Obesity: If you are overweight, you stand at a higher risk of getting uterine fibroids.

Hereditary: A family history of fibroids increases your chances of developing uterus tumors in the future.

Hormonal Imbalance: Excessive production of estrogen and progesterone can cause hormonal imbalance in women. It can result in the growth of fibroids.

Imbalanced Diet: Having a diet high in red meat and an increased intake of alcohol can stimulate the growth of fibroids in many women.

Vitamin D deficiency: If you have low vitamin D content in the body, you can quickly develop uterus tumors.

PCOS/ PCOD: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Disease can cause fibroids.

Underlying Medical Conditions: If you have Type 2 diabetes or hypertension, you are more prone to uterine fibroids.

Extracellular matrix (ECM): ECM helps cells stick together. Increased levels of ECM can make fibroids grow larger. Insulin-like growth factors also cause biological changes in a woman’s body.

Signs and Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

While smaller fibroids are asymptomatic, they start showing symptoms as they keep growing in clusters.

Here are a few common symptoms of uterine fibroids found in women in the childbearing and menopausal age groups.

Abnormal or Heavy Bleeding During Periods

Changes in the regular menstrual bleeding pattern are one of the most common symptoms of uterine fibroid. The bleeding is heavier and persists for a couple of days even after the cycle ends.

Painful Intercourse

If you experience pain during sex, you should immediately consult your gynecologist.

Frequent Urination

Fibroids can cause the problem of frequent urination in many women.

Infertility or Miscarriage

Large fibrous tumors can make a woman infertile and damage the fallopian tubes. It may also result in a miscarriage.

Painful Periods

If you observe discomfort during periods like severe abdominal cramps or stabbing pain in the pelvic area, it may signify an underlying uterine tumor.

Pain in Lower Back or Thighs

Uterus tumors can cause unbearable pain in the lower back and thighs.

Anemia

Heavy loss of blood by abnormal bleeding can cause anemia in women suffering from uterine fibroids.

Constipation and Difficulty in Bowel Movements

It is a common sign of the presence of a non-malignant tumor in the uterus.

Final Thoughts

Fibroid-Induced Pain During Sex: While many of the symptoms of a degenerating fibroid go away as it shrinks and dies, it will not cut the growth from the root. Once the tissue starts receiving adequate blood supply, it will grow again.

It can result in acute problems like severe vaginal bleeding or unbearable

pelvic pain. Hence, if you encounter pain during sex, do not waste time and consult your nearest gynecologist immediately.
